A NOTE ON REQUESTING VITAL RECORDS
- You may request copies of vital records held by the Franklin County Recorder's Office. Each certified copy costs $15 (US). We recomend you request a certified copy if the document is to be used in any legal proceeding. A request for Certified copies must have the signature notarized as well as sending a photo ID. Talk with the recorder about requesting uncertified copies of documents.

When requesting a vital record the applicant must enclose a copy of their photo I.D. such as their driver's license and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

APPLICATION FOR COPY OF MILITARY RECORD - CERTIFIED OR PHOTOCOPY
To obtain a copy of a military records you msut be entitled through a close blood relationship or through an official agency that has entitlement.

APPLICATION FOR CERTIFIED COPY OF AN IOWA VITAL RECORD
Form that may be printed for requesting either county-certified or state-certified copies of a vital record.

MARRIAGE LICENSES
ID Requirement in Iowa: Picture identification. You need to provide Social Security information.
Iowa Requirement: You do not have to be a resident of Iowa.
Previous Marriages: If previously married, the date of divorce or date of spouse's death must be supplied. If the divorce was within 60 days, a signed copy of the divorce decree will need to be shown.
Covenant Marriage Option in Iowa: No.
Iowa Waiting Period: Three (3) business day waiting period.
Fees for Marriage Licenses in Iowa: $30+ - cash only. Varies from County to County.
Other Tests in Iowa: No other tests are required in Iowa for a marriage license.
Proxy Marriage in Iowa: No. However, if one party can't be present at the Recorder's Office to apply for the license, the absent party can sign the Iowa marriage license application before a Notary Public.
Cousin Marriage in Iowa: No.
Common-Law Marriage in Iowa: Yes.
Same Sex Marriage in Iowa: No.
Under 18 in Iowa: Applicants 16 or 17 years of age need to have parental consent.
Wedding Officiants in Iowa: Any ordained or licensed clergymen, and justices of the peace.
Witnesses: You need to have one witness (over 18 years of age) with you when you apply for the license.

Miscellaneous:
An Iowa marriage license is valid for 6 months.

PASSPORT PHOTOS
Say cheese! A new service from the Franklin County Recorder, you can now have an official passport photo taken at the Recorder's Office. Fee payable at that time is $8.


A LITTLE HISTORY ABOUT THE RECORDER'S OFFICE
The Office of the County Recorder was created by the First Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Iowa in 1839. Your County Recorder continues to maintain official records of documents affecting title to real estate in order to preserve property rights and protect innocent third parties in real estate transactions.

The County Recorder is an elected position. They are elected during the general election and their term in office lasts 4 years. There are no term limits in this office.
