The Story of Geneva and
Their Love of Softball - as told by Judy Heitland, City Clerk
"Softball began in Geneva and surrounding
areas in the early 1900's. The men would play ball until they got too
old to run to first, or they ran out of pinch-runners. They would have
an annual all day and evening tournament every year. The wives would
run the food stand and bake lots of pies and desserts too. It was a
BIG day for all. Roughly guessing, the Geneva Fastpitch team started
in the 50's. They won State tourneys and went on to National's several
times. They had a bus that they would travel in to surrounding areas
and states to play softball.
The kids teams got started with all age
groups. We host team games from several counties, and they play in
both of our parks full time during the spring and early summer. The
Fastpitch pretty much just plays for fun now instead of a big challenge.
We would like to have people "swing" down
and watch the action as well as enjoy the good food stand that the
parents take turns running."
Doing Business in Geneva -
Geneva's primary asset to business is rail transportation. Located on
a branch of the Canadian National Railroad, Agri-buiness would find Geneva
especially attractive. In addition, Geneva has Enterprise Zones, offering
a unique package of incentives to qualifying businesses.

Education in Geneva - Most
students attend the AGWSR School
District (Ackley,
Geneva, Wellsburg, Shell Rock) with attendance centers in Ackley. Others
attend the Hampton-Dumont
